I am either going to paint my shed or buy new metal for it. The prblem is the galvinzed metal is rusty on only one portion of each sheet of tin. It is just surface rust and it has not yet started to pit. What is the best to do with this. I could sandblast it and prime it but that would take a while. Is there a primer or converter that I can spray directly on the rust and paint over? What brand and where would I find such a thing. New tin is going to cost about 50.00 a square plus time of taking the old off and putting the new on. I will do both myself which is going to be cheaper, new tin or paint? Thanks Jaker

Hi, can't say without knowing how big your shed is and how much material you need. Some things to consider before deciding:
The tin maybe too thin for blasting and warp and it's impossible to get the sand out of every crevice. A wire brush would be a better approach to removing it. Possibly with a rust remover liquid or paste. The trouble with rust removers and convertors is they will attack the galvanized coating. Cost is $20 to $25 a gallon. Ospho convertor is available at some Ace hardware and home depots. The directions are vague, stating only to use it on all the galvanized if appearance is not important. I don't know what that means. If you're repainting something, appearance is important to most. If you could only get it on the rust that would be fine. Then you need a primer that will adhere to galvanized. Epoxy will, but for a shed it's expensive around $75-$100 for a gallon. Zinc chromate used to be used but is all but gone now due to enviromental laws and the cost of disposal. I have heard it's not available over the counter but is commercially. There are other paint type rust converters but i think you will run into trouble with them sticking to galvanized and have peel problems. Painting over galvanized is a special problem, regular paints will peel. You can also use cold galvanizing compound after removing the rust. It won't match for spot repair, its gray in color like paint. Maybe for a shed, recoating all the metal with it is the best and cheapest refinish method if you want the gray color. It has a reputation for durability, most claim their product is equal to hot dip galvanized. Have never priced it by the gallon, and all i have seen can't be painted over. These are a few problems you run into with refinishing rusty galvanized vs rusty steel.
