Have any of you guys ever used "por 15" for rust? I was told it is really good for rust, and the rust wont come back.

Thanks, Nathan

The best solution to rust is to remove it completely and repaint properly.
We all know that often isn't possible so POR15 and it's near kin are the next best thing. They don't really "fix" much but they do a pretty good job of keeping it from getting worse.

Biggest problem with POR-15 is paint adhesion to it. When you follow their directions, you end up buying a cleaner/rust remover called marine clean so your basically just not painting over tight rust. Your doing chemical rust removal, then you need their special primer tie bond to top coat or primer over everything. Without it, it will chip very easy off the por 15. When you add up the costs of all their recommended products, and the fact your chemically removing rust you may as well just use a rust remover with epoxy primer if you can get all the rust out. Plus you're mixing product lines and risking rejection and lifting. If you don't paint over it the sun will destroy the coating. Properly prepared, it is a very tough paint on it's own but UV sensitive. Nearly impossible to spray without clogging the gun and then you have to buy their special thinner too. I've heard some people spray it with undercoating guns. These are some of the pitfalls I've discovered with this product. I have read others' posts that the rust returned, but with so many steps to properly applying it, it could be application mistakes. It's very messy to handle and if you get it on your skin, it takes weeks to wear off. Just my personal opinion on it, I think it is a formula that the other paint companies probably discovered long ago and passed on. When you add up all the costs of the Por 15 itself and the related products you need with it, it's a very expensive approach to stopping rust in my opinion.

Rust removal is the time tested way to solve your rust problems. If you can't get all the rust off, consider ospho as an alternative. This is a rust converter. I can't give you a long term success story with it personally, but have read good things about it. I don't use these products for something that's going to be a showpiece, but practical things that will be used again and inevitably suffer paint scratches and chips. Currently testing Ospho on a trailer ramp. Time will tell the results on the bottom. The top however will likely be scraped and suffer surface rust again.
