I am not very knowledgeable about painting. I do know that the hardner that is used is very toxic and a person needs to take special precautions.

I was told recently that a special paint mask can be used when painting with hardner. The mask comes sealed in a plastic bag when purchased. It can be used for 72 hours and still provide the necessary protection.

IS THIS TRUE???

Hi Terry,

IMO, the answer is NO!. At least for the isocyanates typically in paint hardeners. The issues of unknown fit testing and unknown exposure concentrations, especially in highly variable DIY settings, make any such claim to "necessary protection" and "safe usage" time laughable. Ask for a NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) approval for use with isocyanates. I doubt such an approval exists for any air purifying type of mask.

NO. You need a positive pressure supplied air system. The mask you refer to is a disposable mask for a one shot deal. Instead of buying replacement cartridges, you throw the whole mask away. Doesn't sound very economical to me. That mask will work for hardener only if it fits perfectly, and lets NO unfiltered air in -- not likely.
