How many coats of 170 primer?

I took the advice of Rod(NH) and others on this forum and tried Omni 170 today on the rear rims of my Cub. I had the rims sandblasted earlier today. I was really impressed - great coverage and a really smooth hard coat. Flowed well, looks great. Couldn't make it run. You were right again!

I know there's a recoat window (for the MTK topcoat) of about 3 days. How many primer coats would your recommend, however? I shot the 170, let it dry for a few minutes, and then added another coat. After allowing 30 minutes to dry, I flipped the rims and shot the other side. Is that sufficient coverage durability wise? Looks great to me.

By the way, I used a green 3M masking tape on the rubber, and it stuck fine. I know this has been a topic of considerable discussion.

Once again the recommendations I've learned from this forum has been invaluable.

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

That should do just fine. The tech sheet for 170 says one coat but I always use two. That thinking goes back to when I was using PPG's premier epoxy primer, DP (DPLF nowadays). That product calls for 1-2 coats -- two coats specifically if a chemical pretreatment or wash (etch) primer is not used. I use epoxy direct to sandblasted metal w/o any pretreatment so I got used to using two coats and it carried over to my use of the 170. I think two coats is a good idea in this instance since the 170 tech sheet is not as specific as the one for the DP.

P-sheet says one, I use two because I can't paint good enough to cover everything with one -- You should be ok.

They do specify one and if you miss your window it says scuff/sand and reapply. So nothing wrong with 2. I questioned the one coat in my mind the first time I used it, until i saw how it sprayed and covered.
