Is Primer Necessary?

With the help of a friend, two summers ago we painted my father's farmall super C, without primer. My friend has been painting tractors as a side job for a long timeand said it wasn't needed. The tractor still looks great. My question is, I have a super C I bought, and will be painting this spring/summer sometime, with the help of this friend. What advantages does primer have? It will be sanded, but probably not sand blasted, unless you think that is necessary. It has the original paint, little rust. Anyhow, any opinions suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

While it may not be needed at $20.00 per gallon why chance it? Primer seals off the old paint (some thinners are antagonistic to other types of paint). It also lets you spot any defects before the top coat and sand them out. We always use 2 coats (or more) of red primer, wet sand after last coat, and then at least 2 coats of color. Hope I helped.

I have painted without primer and with, both having good results. I am now finishing up painting our Farmall 706 with PPG Omni line single stage urethane. I used a epoxy primer under the paint to seal off the old paint and eliminate any problems coming through to the new paint. On the sheet metal I am putting primer/surfacer over the epoxy to sand down smooth. I feel this is the best way to do it, putting $200 of new paint over 45 year old paint seems risky to me. Remove any old paint that is flakey or peeling so the new paint won't come off with it, sandblasting isn't nesessary but it is the easiest way to clean up some parts.
