I'm restoring an old railroad cart that will sit outside so I'm trying to make the paint last as long as possible. I'm using rust converter on the metal and I was wondering if hardener in the converter would help or is it tough enough already? I'm putting it in the primer and paint, did'nt know if the converter needed it too.

Hi John
I'll try not to make this reply a book, We harvest iron ore from the earth and smelt it into steel, when steel rusts it is turning back to iron ore and rust converters stop that process. The problem with this is the onset of the rust is caused by electrolites on the surface mixed with moisture, while the rust converter seals out the moisture and converts the rust it does not remove the original cause of the rust, the electrolite. Anyway, that being said adding a catalyst won't do you any good, in order for a catalyst to work it needs a moleculs to crosslink with which won't be present in the converter leaving you with a film with uncatalyed isocyanates in it and leaving it "soft" actually doing the opposite of what you wanted. Sorry if it's long
Frank

Sorry about that john, I guess the short answer would have been "no" adding hardener to rust converter wont make it better

Thanks, Frank for the reply. You probably ought to be on the Mensa discussion board though. ;^)
