the old paint on the cast iron is in great shape. should I just prime and paint. or should I sand blast first Thanks Ron

You need to sandblast, as you cannot scuff the paint enough to assure adhesion, cast is too rough. Wheels are the one thing on a tractor that I have sandblasted, just too hard to clean up otherwise. If you don't have a sandblaster, you might get by with a wire brush on an angle grinder.

Sand blasting would preserve the original cast iron texture better than wire brushing.

I don't deny that, in fact sand blasting will give it more texture.
