What is the cheapest gun, and paint I can get away with? I want a nice hard finish that will last a long time, but I also want something that looks nice. What i'm painting is a Farmall H. Is it possible to buy the gun, and paint for around $200, and it still look nice?

Here is my two cents. I'm assuming you have never painted anything before. So hear is an idea you will not see on this board to often. I would suggest going to your local Case IH store and buy the paint(just make sure it is relitivly fresh, some dealers don't sell much). Most tractors I paint are IH and I can atest to the quality. IH changed there paint formulation a year or so ago and the paint is real good. The can says that it is an "acrylic Modified alkolyd" for what ever that means. I think this new paint glosses more than the original. I just painted my 806 and could just about see myself in it(I do not use any kind of hardner). Of course proper technique and following the directions to the letter are a must. Never mix and match brands, alway use a system from start to finish. Use IH primer, thinner, and Paint. Besides at about $40 a gallon if you have to put on a couple of extra coats it won't break the bank. With IH primer and thinner, I figure you could paint an H for maybe $125.

Now for the gun. If you are going to only paint one tractor a decent gun is probelly out of the question. If you want a great gun buy a binks Model 7, They list for about $350. For you I would suggest a Coleman "professional" spray gun. They can be bought at places like Menards and Lowes. Thay are a very very cheap nock off of the binks model 7, but cost about $37. I have used them to spray primer on occation. If you have never used a better gun and plan to use it only once it will do. So with $125 in paint and $40 in a gun, you should have $35 dollars left over. Decals cost between $40 and $75. The $40's are one big mylar sticker. The $75's are individually die cut vinyl, and look real nice. Determine the quality of the paint job when done, and then buy the decals.

Thanks, that post did help alot. But there is one question I have that they didn't cover, how many gallons will it take? I'm guessing like, 1, 1.5?

Well, back when i was painting autos, i went to work for a Chrysler dealer, who had a body shop ! He played the money card "Close to the vest" so to say. The paint guns he furnmished were best suited to spraying oil on the driveway, instead of spraying cars! So, i went out to the local flea market and bought 2 of those $35 spray guns! They looked just like the Binks and the Binks parts would fit them! Now, i can just hear the paint rep saying:"Oh those guns are o.k. for primer, but not for painting base/ clear coat finishes!" Well, i asked him to evaluate a paint job i had just finished! I told him i had done it with one of those "Flea market" specials. He allowed that it looked as good as an expensive gun job. so, don't let someone fool you on the Binks or DeVilbiss copies. It ain't the gun, its the guy who uses it! Don't go spending $350 on a gun you may never use again after one job!

I have done a Super H. A gallon will probably do it, but you may need an additional pint or quart, less if you are better at it. This assumes 3 coats. Start with a gallon, paint the cast, then you should be able to tell if you have enough for the hood, grille, gas tank and small parts. I use a touch up gun for most of the small stuff, less waste that way.

My Super H was completely disassembled, if you paint it assembled, probably less paint (and it won't look as nice, either).
