I am deep into the process of restoring a Ford 801. I have completed tear down and have rebuilt motor and other parts and I am ready to start assembly and will be ready for paint soon!

Here are my questions:

1. How do you guys properly cover up areas that you do not want paint on like say the manifold intakes as I plan to paint the engine without the manifold attached to get better coverage?

2. My tractor is pretty much bare metal now and I have been using Picklex as I have been going along to keep metal from rusting. I will be using PPG Omni paint and primer. My question is on the PPG paint: Can I order the exact right color for the tractor already mixed? Are there online stores to do this or best to go into a paint store?

3. When does the hardener get added? Do I do this or is this something I need to ask for when paint is being made up?

4. DOes someone have the paint codes for Ford 801 red / orange and the odd grey color used for the paint scheme?

I have read a lot on this website and has proved to be invaluable in my efforts to get this tractor done. thanks everyone!! OH, and yes, I have a fresh air system!!

Thanks

Phil

Hi Phil, Johns suggestion is a good one. I did that and our local PPG jobber matched the red very close to the FNH spray can red. I think he said he started with the formula for Mars Red then tweaked it to match. Cost I think was $87.00/gal. If interested post back and I will give his phone, maybe with the recipe your local can mix it for you. They also show the ford gray in the agriculture section of thier catalog. HTH

If he is not I am interested in the number I am.

I am ready to get my gray. You say it is listed in PPG's code list under agriculture. That may be all I need but would like the number just in case my store can not find it.
If you do not want to post it e-mail it to me at
jpfmcf@yahoo.com1234

Take the numbers (spam filter) off the end of address.

My red is a little to orange but it is my tractor. LOL..... ...

Thanks
John

You sound like you are in the same boat I was in a few months ago.
While I will let these other guys answer your questions I will tell you what I ran into trying to answer your same questions and you can learn from my mistakes.
1) Masking tape. Put it on to cover the area with a good overlap. Then cut out with a razor blade to fit the exact area you want to cover.
2)I used PPG Omni MTK. It cost a little more than the MAE but is a urethane not a enamel. I went to my local PPG store. While you may be able to get it online the shipping cost of hazardous materials will out weigh the cost savings of the paint. Plus you are talking to a person not a computer. And No you can not get the exact color from them by just asking for ford red/orange. see #4.
3)It gets added by you in the spray cup along with the reducer. Once added you only have hours before it will harden in spray can. Caution; Hardener is only good for 14 days in a open can. This is one mistake I made. I did not know it had a shelf life in the unmixed state. So I got a quart of it. I then used about a pint of it to spray my frame/cast parts. Before I could get back to do other pieces the time had passed so I had to throw the other pint away. Buy hardener in small cans even know it cost more. Especially if you will be painting as you go. Once you open the can you only have 14 days to use it; a few more if you put it in the fridge; but then you got the wife on your case because you have tractor stuff in the kitchen refrigerator.
4)No but here is what I would do if I had to do it over. I used MTK Ambulance Orange. I can not read all of the code but it says XX503-B. I do not know what the X's are. Looks like 63503-B but I can not be sure. I have not got the gray yet. The color I got is a little to orange. One more shade red should be very close. If I had to do it over I would go to Ford/NH and order a spray can of each color. I would then use this to spray a sample that the PPG store could shoot with their sample taker. They need a 4X4 inch flat surface.

Once you decide if you want MAE or MTK these guys can link you to spec sheets that will lay out mixing and spray/recoat times. They have been a great help to me understanding the process.
