I have been reading some of the posts here and I am wondering about the paint I selected for my tractor. I bought AGCO because someone suggested that it was practical to touch up using just the spary cans. But now, I am wondering since there is no hardener recommended, the paint job will be poor. I have the wheels, tranny cover, 3 point, brake covers, and tons of small parts already painted with the AGCO. I haven't done the main framework, or any of the sheet metal. Should I stop and switch to another type that has a hardener? What about the paint that's already on? If I swtich now, do I have to strip that paint?

I am not unhappy with the look of the finish but am wondering about durability. Can a person put on the enamel, then coat with a clear coat urethane with hardener to give a more durable finish?

About safety: I do my painting outside. I wear a respirator mask that I was told had the proper cartridges for painting. I wear a stocking hood, and coveralls and rubber gloves. Do I have to inverst in a fresh air system or is what I am doing safe?

If Agco paint is an aklyd enamel, it will fade rapidly when exposed to sunlight. If it is an acrylic enamel, it will last longer. Paints by the major paint manufacturers are higher quality. The appearance of your paint job will be determined more by your skills than the paint you use, although IMO, the better paints are easier to use. Urethane must have hardener to cure, and you cannot use urethane over enamel. The cartridges in your mask only protect you from isos if they are brand new and if the mask fits perfectly -- so the answer is no, you are not protected, you need a positive pressure air supply, the mask is negative pressure.

The mask is fine for unhardened paint.

when i use implement paints i use a generic acrylic enamel hardner sold by my local paint store ,use about 2-3 ounces per quart of unreduced paint.i have never had a problem with the hardner and have used it alot ,you need a fresh air system to spray paint with hardner ,in a few rare cases it is approved with a charcoal mark.(like outdoors" on large industrial projects ,i have a fresh air system but normally wear a fresh charcoal mask.im not telling you to do that ,but that is what i do ,and i wear the mask when im mixing paint also, just start with the hardner with what you havent painted ,and you can scuff the other parts with a scotch brite pan ,and shoot them ,make sure they have been painted a week before you repaint them.

It's not a good idea to paint over one brand or type of paint with another brand or type. Most likely it will lift. I have tried that on small parts that weren't too important. It did not work at all.
