Can a hardner be added to alkyd enamel implement paint?

Are there any limitations on what kind of paint I can apply over alkyd?

Is synthetic enamel different than alkyd enamel?

Again, thanks for your comments.

A lot of people use hardener with aklyd paint. Some manufactuers sell it. I agree with Seth that you shouldn't mix brands, although some have been successful, it's still a crap shoot. The only paint that is safe to use with aklyd is paint that the manufacturer says is compatible. By the time you put another manufacturer's (for example) clear over it, even if it works (not likely), you could have bought a decent acrylic enamel for about the same money. I believe aklyd and synthetic are the same thing. When you use aklyd you are saving money up front, in exchange for durablility and less fading. Your choice.

It might work, but I would not try it. I have admit I do not use harder on any tractors I paint, but here is my general rule of thumb. If hardner is not sold by the maker of the paint for that product line don't use it. Never mix and match paint systems!
