Saw on this site that you worked for DuPont. Do you have the paint code for 1950 Ferguson TO20? It is classified as light gray. I was talking with NAPA because they had the correct paint match. I was looking at their single stage urethane paint. (99L3740/10039) I hear a lot of good things about DuPont but our local DuPont dealer don't have much interest in tractor paint. Guess they have more demand for automotive colors.

Thanks to Rod and Frank in reply to Wayne Wiseman, 10-15-2004 17:23:19
Thanks for your help on tractor paint. I thought painting a 1950 Ferguson TO20 would be and easy task because the tractor is a single color, light grey. Just so many different types of paint. I traveled around this summer at tractor shows asking questions about types of paint. Many different answers. Guess I will have to go to local NAPA dealer and use his recommendations of MSU system. He recommends self etch on bare metal, surface cleaner, urethene primer with the single stage MSU paint.

Thanks for you help. Wayne

Hi Wayne,

I am curious as to why you would look to other than Martin-Senour (NAPA) if they have the correct color shade for you. In any event, the PPG listing of tractor colors that I have indicates a Ferguson Gray of #30419. I would expect that would be available at least in their OMNI line of automotive paints. That would be one alternative for you if have a PPG jobber in your area. No guarantee that is precisely the shade you want though. The PPG number does cross to the MS #10039 that you mention, per the MS website. Note that I think the 99 prefix is an indicator of an acrylic enamel and not a urethane, so make sure of the chemistry you want before you buy. From the MS website you can see what quality (cost) levels and different chemistries are available from MS in the 10039 color.

I have no particular brand preference. I use both DuPont and PPG products and find them comparable if you stay within similar quality and chemistry lines. I have never used MS products but would guess they would also be comparable within similar lines. I think it is more important that you stay with a brand name that has a local jobber that is good to deal with. I have two local jobbers that carry both DuPont and PPG. One of them I just don't do any business with at all because I think the jobber rep is an absolute a$$. And getting the manufacturer's tech sheets for the products you are using is more important that verbal "opinions" from most jobber reps. Sorry Frank, but there are some real losers out there selling paint of all brands :o).

Hi Wayne
There seem to be alot of grays for these tractors, I did find a gray for a Ferguson 195 20, the Dupont number is M9251. If this is not what you need all the Dupont distributors have a ChromaVison which is a camera for developing colr formulas, you will need to provide a sample of the color from a pary or a competitors paint that matches and the store will take a picture and get a formula. hope this helps
Frank
