I have a DB 885/1 1974 model. I want to repaint the tractor, but I'm not restoring or going to show. I am in the process of making all repairs to get mechanically sound, fixing leaks, etc.. What I need to know is what is the minimum I should remove (small parts etc.) and what to remove old paint grease etc. with, because I don't want to sandblast and I don't want to remove anymore than neccessary because sometimes you tear up more than you fix in doing so. Sheetmetal is fair on hood, has been rattle canned and has some damage that looks like has been bondo filled fenders has some rust thru that will have to be repaired. I can do the sheet metal work myself and I plan to paint it myself, even though this will be my first paint job. Have been going thru prior posts and has been a great help in getting started with the painting and also I need to know the paint code for this tractor if someone knows. Thanks for any advice. sorry for being so long winded.

I'm not familiar with your tractor (I assume DB is David Bradley) but the more parts you take off the more you get painted. Otherwise the side of the parts next to the block gets no paint (block doesn't either) and what does get painted has a layer of crud under it. I remove everything that will come off and am not concerned about damage, I just replace all the gaskets. Many parts need to be overhauled anyway. For paint removal I use chemical stripper, for grease and dirt, a combination of oven cleaner, wire brushes on a drill or angle grinder, and pressure washing. Best if you have a hot water pressure washer, I don't. If you want a decent job, there is no easy way. What you remove depends on the individual tractor. Absolute minimum is the carburetor, distributer, air cleaner, lights, generator, starter; on some tractors the governor. Anything that you cannot spray at a 90 degree angle without messing something else up.

Thanks CNKS, I was afraid I would get (no easy way out)response, the DB stands for David Brown which is a three cylinder diesel, looks like I will have to expect some major cleaning and removal of some parts to get the paint in all the right areas. I think I might as well just go on with a total restoration project on this tractor if I"m going to go all the way with the painting. I have a pressure washer but not heated, I guess no pain no gain.

Meant to say David Brown. Diesel -- then it has an injection pump and tubes. I paint rods and tubes separately -- wastes a lot of paint, and for some reason hard to get coverage on a round surface that you can't paint in one pass. The main part of the tractor is easy, it's the small parts that are the work. It's best to do the restoration work before you paint. But, by the time I get all the parts off I need to fix, I'm not about to put it all back together, run it and make sure it's fixed right, then take it apart again to repaint. As a result there is always some freshly painted part that has to come off that I didn't fix right to begin with.

CNKS basically I don"t have a lot to fix, tractor is pretty mechanically sound, needs tie-rod ends some wheel seals, new link arm ends and missing lights that were on fenders and original front grille, a little wiring to get in order. I just got the hydraulics working correctly, she starts and runs good, transmission, pto and clutch is good, brakes work but might need cleaning or new shoes, and new rubber needed. Tractor only has 3200 hours but apparently was not kept out of weather or serviced as needed. Thanks again for your help and advice.
