I'm posting this for my son, Lance, because his name is already reserved...

"I"m working on my first tractor, a Farmall A, and I"ve decided to have a friend of mine paint it. He normally paints cars, but he says he"ll do the tractor for me. Should the inside of the transmission and p.t.o. castings be painted? And what type of top coat should I tell him to use, or doesn"t it matter? How long is the shelf-life of paint? I might have him paint it as I work, just to save him the trouble of having to take a bunch of parts off, when I could just bring a few castings to him at a time.

Thanks!"

I would have told him the answers to these questions, but I have never painted a tractor myself, always took it to a pro.

Most of your questions are answered in the post above. Start with new paint -- then you won't need to worry about shelf life. But, hardeners should be used within 2 weeks of opening. Don't paint the inside of castings. The correct PPG number for your A is 70019, the DuPont number is 7410. These will cross to other brands. Don't use farm store paint.
