I am going to paint a 38 WC Chalmers and want to know for this project what the best way to get a good shiny finish is. I have the air spraying supplies and have used them in the past, but never get a real shiny finish Like some do. The tractor does"t have anything left of the paint on it now and I wanted to know the best way to paint this machine is? Specifically, what type of paint? What type of clear coat? What about primers?

Use a major brand of paint such as that made by PPG, DuPont, Martin Senour, Sherwin Williams. Don't use farm store paint, it is not high quality. PPG Omni system: MP 170 epoxy primer on the cast and sheet metal. MP 181 (no hardener) or 182 (with hardener) surfacer (sandable) on the sheet metal, not needed on the cast. Topcoat with MAE acrylic enamel with or without hardener or MTK Acrylic urethane (must have hardener). If you use 182, MAE with hardener, or MTK, you MUST use a supplied air system, an ordinary mask will not protect you from isocyanates in the hardener, which can be deadly. Clear coating is not necessary unless you want an absolute show quality finish. Hardeners bring out gloss, the paint cures quickly, is more durable, and can be repaired sooner -- but is not absolutely necessary.

What is the difference in ppg MAE and the MTK paint? I have used the MAE but not the MTK.Is one more durable than the other?

I am not a paint chemist, so I can't explain detailed differences. MAE is acrylic enamel, MTK is acrylic urethane. Acrylic urethane is supposed to be more durable and longer lasting and has perhaps more gloss than acrylic enamel with hardener, which in turn has more gloss and is perhaps more durable than acrylic enamel without hardener. While acrylic enamel can be applied with or without hardener, acrylic urethane must have it or it will not cure properly. To sum MAE is better than Alkyld (sp?)paint, which was the factory paint on old cars and tractors. MTK is higher quality than MAE. From there you can go to base coat-clear coat, and higher quality urethanes which cost much more money.
