I have removed the gas tank from my 1950 Ferguson TO20. I need to sand the gas tank before metal etch, primer and top coat. Is it safe to sand using an Dual Action air sander with a 5" sanding disk or should I remove the gas and fill with water?

Got to respond to this one. Leave gas in the tank??? Why??? Pour out the gas and use a water based solvent to wash the tank. Rinsing the tank
with plain water really doesn't cut the film. Oil and water don't mix. Once the film is removed then the vapors won't be generated. No vapor, no
boom.

I just restored the gas tank on my Farmall A. I derusted and coated the inside before I tackled the outside. Then, I plugged the outlet and put the gas cap back on so that nothing, neither dirt nor sparks, would have a way in.

Don"t worry about a gas tank. For all the gas tanks i have sanded I have never removed and emptied one. Putting water in one just sounds like your asking for trouble. Water in a gas tank could cause all sorts of problems. I do try to avoid using real course paper in strait orbital mode when stripping paint, as it will throw an occational spark. Though even those sparks really are not a big deal as long as the gas cap is tight in place. Heck my father new a guy who would smoke a ciggaret while filling the tank with gas. Cancer killed him, not an explosion, not that I would suggest trying it.

I drain out the water and leave the drain and cap off for a while -- forms a little rust in the bottom, but I consider it insignificant, haven't had a problem. You only have to have one spark-gas mixture at the right time and you get a nice explosion -- tractor gas caps are not air tight.

I rinse mine out several times with water. Still alive.
