I'm sort of a self-taught painter. I've done a few dozen tractors over the years with mixed to good success. Recently, I've been getting fairly good at it. I shot a John Deere MT over the week-end that looks mighty good if I do say so myself.

SO....I'm getting ready to paint my favorite tractor next. I want it to be the sharpest paint job I'm capable of doing. When I get the sheet metal done, I MIGHT want to do a clear-coat on it.

Now the question....I've used hardeners in most all of my paint for years. I have all the needed resperator/filtered exhaust fan/ect..... Before I go buy my clear-coat, do you use hardener in it? My paint store will set me straight when I get there, but I'd like to walk in with SOME knowledge of what I'm doing. Thanks in advance. John

While I haven't painted my tractor yet, I have bought the paint, including clear coat, and am waiting for a warm day. I'm using PPG's ICI/Value Pro and their clear coat that is used with the Acrylic Urethane is hardened. I'm going to mix some clear coat in with the last coat of paint and the clear coat is mixed with its hardener first, then added to the urethane that has been mixed with its hardener.

Yes oyur clear will most likly require a catalyst and probably a reducer, what brand are using If Dupont I will tell you exactly what you should probably use and what additives go in it.

Most likely DuPont. Only other option is PPG. (I deal with 2 different paint suppliers. They carry those 2 brands. (Both paint AND clearcoat)

I'm fully aware of the precautions I must take when handling these products. I just haven't ever used them myself.

I've found that some folks are a bit leary of recomending them unless they suspect they will be used in a safe manner. They will....I don't want to kill myself, or anyone else. John

If money is no issue and you want bullet proof, Imron 6000 base and Imron 3440 clear, next best would be Chroma premeir base with 72500 clear, middle of the road would be Chroma base with G24500S clear, economy would be Chroma base with 7900S clear, and then the nason line, Nason base with 465-00 clear.
