I have a good paint gun, but now I see guns with the container on top. What kind of gun is this? Why is this better? Thanks Stan

The newer guns are mostly HVLP GF High Volume Low Pressure Gravity Fed. They were originally developed because of concerns about air polution. The low pressure arrangement puts much more of the paint on the surface being painted and less into the air. An somewhat unintended consequence of this is they need less paint for the same job that older guns. Makes sense. If you waste less paint, you need less paint. The gravity feed makes for a nice, even flow of paint into the gun. Smooth flow in helps smooth flow out. I agree that the Gravity Fed ones are quicker and easier to clean. I have found it is best to have a separate gun for primer, if possible. Primer likes to hide in the inside parts of the gun and is a bit hard to get it all out.

It'll take someone with more technical expertise than I have to explain all the details, but that is a "gravity feed" gun. Most are HVLP (From what I've been told, that means High Volume, Low Pressure) I bought a new HVLP gun a few months back. I used it for the first time last week. My painting skills always left much to be desired. Not with the new style of gun! With less air pressure, there wasn't near the "orange peel". (And I MIGHT have finally learned how to mix paint!) They don't stir up all the dust and dirt with much lower pressure. They make an amature painter look MUCH better.

Here's my "effort" from last week. PPG Acrylic Urathane. John

Also, the newer HVLP guns seem (to me anyway) to be MUCH easier to clean out after use....Might just be my imagination though...John

'nudder view!
