I plan on painting my International 464 this winter, does anyone have any tips! I was planning to use spray cans is this good or not? Never used a spray gun before? hows the best way to get the old paint off? Do I need to take it to bare metal or just get it smooth? Can the wheels be painted with the tires still mounted? Thanks For Any and All Replies!!!

Your handle related to OTR truck engine size/manufacturer?

IF so, and it's 600 cu in, it is probably electronically controlled injecton (rather than mechanical with pump and all).

Wanna tell the folks how many miles per gallon you get with your 80,000 lb rig OTR.

I'm bettin it is going to be 7 to 8 depending on what and where.

For those reading this just think about that..... 80,000# running 70 mph with the big frontal area of a big truck getting 7 to 8 mpg; half what you get in your gas 5,000# p/u.

Whadda deal

Mark

Answers to all of your questions are in the archives. I suggest you read them first and then ask specific questions for the areas you don't understand. To be blunt, forget spray cans. As to the old paint, Indy is correct if it is in good shape. Seal it with epoxy primer first. The problem is, on old tractors, you don't know what's under the stuff or what has been done. If you are SURE it is the original paint, then there is probably little or no rust under it. If it has been repainted, it was likely repainted over flaking paint and rust, as that is what most people do to sell a tractor. I strip mine, regardless of condition, which thus far has been lousy. I remove the tires, because the inside of the rims likely need attention, as well as the outside. I probably go to more work than is necessary, but I have nothing else to do.

I'll answer what I can....
First, the spray can issue. You CAN, but you will end up spending enough to pay for a REAL paint job. It'll take anywhere from 15 to 30 cans to get good coverage, and you still won't have that great of a job. Consider the fact that MOST spray paint is of mediocre quality. No Hardener, and not all that consistant as far as color matching from can to can. It's possible to get a fair paint job, as far as the casting part of a tractor, but cans just won't give you a quality finish on the (all important) sheet metal. Buy yourself a gun...Even a cheap gun will do a far better job than cans, and you have more options with the paint that way.
There's dozens of good ways to remove paint. BUT...If it's still in fair shape, leave it. It's as good as any primer you can apply. Unless that paint is in terrible shape, you'll be spending hours removing it, then just re-applying more. Doesn't make sense in my book.
And YES, you can paint rims with tires still mounted. It's done all the time. If your rims are in good shape, why remove the tires? If the rims are rusted, now would be the time to remove the tires and paint the "insides" of the rims though.

Here (AGAIN!) is my tractor I just painted. The tires stayed on while painting. John
