Bought some 2150 to repaint a couple of M Farmalls. The I.H. Case dealer said their is no Case hardner for this paint. Wondering if this is correct. Seem to remember a Posting saying they carried a hardener for 2150. If not what is a suitable hardner for this paint? Also is using the hardener a good idea as far as results are concerned? Harder to paint with or without its use? Thanks for any info.

I've used lot's of the CIH paint with Autobody Master 8108 Wet Look hardner with good results. Here is a picture of some 1066 sheet metal painted with the CIH Gloss Red paint with the hardner added.

CLIFF, LOOKS REAL NICE FROM THE PIX, ONE QUESTION THOUGH, DOES YOUR PAINT LOOK LIKE THE RED IH PAINT COLOR OR DOES IT HAVE A DEEPER RED COLOR APPREANCE?

The Gloss Red paint does have a little deeper and glossier than the 2150 paint but you almost have to have them side by side to tell any difference in color. The 2150 paint is correct for tractors built from the mid 50's through '81 but from '82 to the present Gloss Red is the correct match.

Cliff, you have painted more tractors than I have, how does IH 2150 compare with Omni 71310 (I believe I have read other posts where you said you used it, if not I apologize). The last tractor I painted with 71310 was, IMO too orange, and the paint varies a lot from batch to batch. Trying to figure out if it is the local supplier or simply the nature of the paint. How much of an orange tint does the IH 2150 have compared to 71310? What about the durability and fade resistance of IH 2150? I would consider using it, provided I could use the MP 170 epoxy and surfacers in the Omni system. I would prefer to use the Omni hardener, if compatible, since I'm not sure I can find the one you use. And, I'm one of those who recommends not mixing different brands ---. Would also consider DuPont Nason 96766, if someone could tell me how orange it is compared to others. Or, perhaps the 71310 is correct, I don't have anything locally to compare it to.

The first time I used the 71310 I noticed it had a little bit of orange tint to it at first (I also mixed some Omni clear in with it which might have been a factor) but on the other two tractor"s I"ve used it on I haven"t noticed the orange at all. I have a feeling the orange tint probably is just due to the guy mixing it being just a tiny bit off on one of the measurements. As far as durability and fade resistance I don"t think the 2150 can touch the Omni urethane, I painted our 706 with the 71310 almost four years ago and it still looks like I painted it yesterday. I have used the Omni epoxy and primer surfacer under the 2150 with no problems and I can"t imagine going back to the CIH primer. On our 706 I later touched up some bolt heads and other paint scratches with 2150 and I could not tell any difference in color from the 71310. Here is a picture of our 1086 which I painted with 71310 and it doesn"t have any orange tint at all. I will also add that on our 706 I noticed the orange tint the most under artificial light when the paint was still fairly new and now I don"t notice it at all.

Thanks--According to what you say, I think I have a mixing problem, but don't know how to tell those guys I want it done right, there is too much turnover in their employees. The orange tint is more noticable under the flourescent lights I paint under. One tractor seemed to become more red with time. The other one, painted over a year ago is definitely too orange. Thinking of switching to DuPont Nason at another dealer, to see if I can get it done right. Another thing, the orange tint doesn't seem to show up for a few hours after painting, looks fine right after application.

I've been using "Econo-Body" #15117 Super Gloss hardner with the C/IH 2150 with excellent results. Sold at NAPA stores.

Lost it -- here it is, I hope. Forgot to give it a title. Under PPG Omni system, click on MAE 101. No need to backspace on this one as it lists all products.

I haven't used 2150, and don't like mixing different brands. Far as I know there is no specific hardener for it. I have used PPG Omni acrylic enamel with with hardener, the ratio is 8:1:1 paint:reducer:hardener, see the link. Other than that I do know people use hardener with it. Ask on the Farmall board. Hardener will cause it to flow out better. It will cure much faster, enabling you to sand and make repairs, probably the next day if need be. You need a supplied air system instead of just a charcoal mask because of the iso's in the hardener. Even for a one shot deal you can get sick from the iso's. I felt the effects after touching up my second tractor without one, even though I used supplied air for the whole tractor. I would recommend PPG Omni or DuPont's Nason rather than the Case-IH paint. Note in the link that it tells you exactly what you should use for primer and prep. Not true with Case-IH. You can backspace out part of the links URL and locate the spec sheets for the other primers, etc mentioned.

It should be noted that unlike unhardened Omni MAE, unhardened IH 2150 can be sanded and repainted after 48 hours. It is very forgiving paint if you follow the direction.
