If you've seen my post's below you'll see that I have been buying a bunch of different paint trying to match colors. What has supprised me is the price differences.

without reducers and thinners Napa 99l-10091 Acrylic enamel $27.12/PT price to spray 1 pt = $27.12

Dupont Nason 655 Ful-thane uearthane $52.45/qt ful-thane catalist $18.35/2pt price to spray 1 pt = $35.40

PPG Omni MTK60080A Urethane $11.11/pt Hardener enough for 2 qts $13.98 price to spray 1 pt = $14.61

PPG concept DCC60080 Urethane $38.50/pt catalyst 2 qt $25.40 Price to spray 1 pt = $44.85

Jason,

I am not surprised at the difference between the OMNI and Concept urethanes. The Concept is the high end and the OMNI the low end, relatively speaking, in PPG's single stage urethane lines. I haven't used any Concept but the thing I have noticed about the difference between PPG's high and low end products is coverage and color matching. You can expect to use an additional coat with the OMNI for similar coverage and if you are panel-matching a car paint, the match is not quite as good. If you are doing overalls however, the lower cost of the OMNI (even considering an extra coat) makes it an excellent choice, IMO.

I am somewhat surprised at the cost difference between the OMNI and the Nason. Nason is DuPont's "economy" or "value" line and I would have expected it to be more in line with the cost of the OMNI. The NAPA price for the AE also seems to be high. I don't know which line in Martin Senour you are talking about though. If it's a higher-end product comparable to PPG's Delstar or DuPont's Centari, then it probably is not that bad. I don't know why the better acrylic enamels are currently priced so high. They are rapidly going the way of the Dodo bird for most automotive work though. Perhaps it's due to environmental issues with the solvents or simply supply and demand pressures. Delstar is no longer available in my area, having been effectively "replaced" by the OMNI MAE. Centari still is but I don't know for how much longer.

Differences in pricing policy between jobbers can also frustrate accurate cost comparisons, although one would expect competition would minimize such differences in the same geographic area.

The Nason that was used was to compare was the highest price nason it wass the Urethane not the acrylic or alkyd product that is cheaper.

Are you basing those prices on per gallon/8 or the cost of a one pint quantity purchased separately? Your MTK price is very close to what I paid last time I painted, but I purchased a whole gallon. Per individual pint it was much higher. I believe my dealer marks up the price when he sees me drive up.

You are looking at radically different paint technologies and with PPG/Omni, different qualities in the same company.
I would expect substantial differences between acrylic and urethane paints.

I'm basing these prices on what I paid, for the quanity purchased. Which was mostly pints. This included any discounts I get. I'm not sure if the Napa was high or low end. I was very suprised to see the Napa Acrylic to be more than some of the urethane's. The Dupont dealer in my area is noted to be on the high side of things, Thats why I took my discount in the pricing. I did find I had the most trouble with painting the ppg's omni, some yellow kept seperating out, the concept came out much better, but I AM NOT A PAINTER.

Just a note, but make sure you buy the gallons instead of the pints and quarts, you'll find out that they are much cheaper.

yes, that's what I plan to do. The pricing is just extra info from my Persian orange paint code tests.

Omni is typically a bit thinner than most paints so you have to take that into account and paint just a bit differently. I try to shoot a very light, dry coat then 3 full wet coats making sure I give it plenty of time to flash between coats.
