I've always been curious as to how people can take old paint on a tractor or piece of equipment and buff it out to a nice shine. I've heard to wet sand first with 1500 grit and then use a buffer. What steps do any of you recommend and what kind of buffer machine should I use? Also, what about using rubbing compound? Please send me info on how to buff out fresh paint and also faded, older paint. Thanks for all your help!

This post has been here a couple of days with no response -- I'm not the expert, but I don't think I would try color sanding old paint. I have done one color sanding of new paint, due to the finish having more orange peel than I liked -- I look at the new paint thing as more of a salvage operation to cover up lack of technique. As far as the old paint, go to an auto supply store and get a couple of grades of hand rub stuff and follow it with wax. Buffers are difficult to use on tractors due to the small size and curvature of the hood, etc, although it can be done. It is also easy to burn thru the paint, particularly if it is thin and badly oxidized as most are. Otherwise, there are several automotive sites that describe what you want to do -- do a search, old tractors have the same paint as old cars.
