Hi all! It's been awhile since I posted last. About ready to spray some paint on my 48 M (finally). I have my HVLP equipment and fresh air respirator w/full hood on-hand. The final decision I have to make is what brand of paint to use.

In my area, I have Martin Senour and Nason paints readily available. I also have Sherwin Williams close by but have about decided the Martin Senour or Dupont finishes are the way to go.

I have elected to use single stage urethane over epoxy primer on the cast. I might use two stage urethane on the sheet metal. I have prepared the cast with Picklex-20 after grinding to the bare metal. (Many, many hours spent grinding!) Before priming, I will clean all parts with scotchbrite pads and PPG DX330 (or equivalent). I will stay away from etch primers after using Picklex as this is not recommended!

What I need to know are the proper paint codes for the Martin Senour and Nason paints so I can be sure of my suppliers selection. Any info on these codes and which brand may be better to use will be appreciated.

The IH paint codes changed in 1949, the correct color for a 1948 is IH 50, or DuPont 7410, don't know the Martin Senour, but your supplier can cross reference the DuPont number. I have only used PPG, and have no opinion other than all three are probably equivalent.

Do you have the PPG code for -48 and older. I'm going with Concept. Also a buddy who is a painter told me to use the slowest reducer they have so I can take my time covering all the nooks & crannies, do you agree, he says any overspray will then have a chance to blend in. Thanks

Code for Concept is no different from any other, far as I know -- IH 50/PPG 70019. As far as reducer, I haven't painted enough to feel safe messing around, so I use the reducer for the temperature at the moment (or as close as I can get to it). However, I do not agree with what he says, just paint it at the normal speed. If you are going slower, and trying to hold the gun in one place for even a half second, you will probably get runs or sags, no matter what reducer you use. When I paint, the tractor is stripped of everything that is practical to take off and paint separately, which to me is nearly everything, since I don't have a deadline. So, I really don't have any nooks and crannies -- it is hard to paint all the curves, etc and get good coverage, though.

Thanks for the advice, buddy paints cars in GM dealership. Fair bit different than a tractor. What nobody can tell me around here is how to deal with bolt heads etc when you put all the pieces back together. Any more info would sure help. Thanks again.

The bolt heads look ok to me touched up with a brush, unless you look close, the chips you paint aren't that noticeable. To me it's diminishing returns to mask them off an spray them. I sometimes put in new cadmium plated bolts in selected positions (correct or not), rather than paint the old ones, but I don't like so many that it calls attention to the bolts and not the tractor. Examples are the bolts that hold the grille, and the bolts that hold the rim on an H or M. I also used them to hold the disk brake covers on my Super H.

Good idea, this is my first, but since you mention it she would look pretty with a few fresh plated bolt heads, especially in the rear wheel weights etc. Thanks again. I was going Green crazy, but working on this girl sure is showing me that Farmall was an awesome make, always did like International before Teneco bought them up. I shouldn't knock Case either, there are quite a few 1070 - 2290 tractors around here, and they're good to me, give me lots of work.

Yep, those "bolt heads, etc." worry me too! I guess there will be a fair amout of "touch up" in order. I plan on going with plated grade 8 bolts where I can so painting will not be needed. I am not too worried about maintaining the original look. A "custom" look is fine with me.

Thanks for the info. What would the proper paint codes be for 49 and after? Also, do you feel my approach to cleaning and preperation is OK?

Post 1949, IH 2150, PPG 71310, DuPont 96766. Your procedure is about the same as mine. When you use the 330, you will find the rag turns black. It takes many applications before it is more or less clean -- I do not know how critical that is. The phosphoric acid(Picklex) reacts with the cast. I have often wished I had a place to use a hot water pressure washer, then dry immediately, then use the 330, then epoxy primer, perhaps skipping the picklex completely. But, my building has no drain, can't do it outside, because by then the wheels are removed. So, I don't have a way to get the cast squeaky clean. Hope you have success.

My problem is, I can only do a little at a time. I have to preserve the cast from flash rust until I have enough parts ready for "paint day". I thank you for your time and the info you have afforded me.
