If you mean spray cans, your JD dealer, if you used a spray gun before and did not use paint from your JD dealer, it probably won't match.

There are some paint suppliers that own the equipment to make spray cans, they will mix whatever color you need and then load it into a spray can.

Hey CNKS in reply to CNKS, 01-30-2005 08:50:41
But CNKS ,wouldn't those custom spray bombs be good for painting bolt heads and touching up the same after reassembling loose parts that were painted individually instead of firing up the old spray gun several times?I always seem to miss a few bolts.
Aren't you the one who uses PickeleX? Do you scuff that before you spray the epoxy primer? I forgot and am almost ready to start painting the Massey Harris I am restoring.I used a product made by Permatex from NAPA called Rust Preventative. It also turned the metal black.I assume they are all about the same?Phosphoric acid ?Thanks, bob

I need to get used to my spray bottle thing, because the only time I used it, it was too easy to get runs -- advantage is the paint is the same, so there is a perfect match. I usually touch up bolts and other nicks from reassembly with unhardend acrylic enamel and a brush. All phosphoric acid products are not the same, although I did find one at Home Depot, that I believe works the same as Picklex at a fraction of the cost. I think the product you are referring to is a conversion coating, apply to rusty metal and there is a black residue. I clean the metal first, then apply the Picklex, it leaves a white residue. I remove all the white residue I can with a scotchbrite-type pad, then use DX 330 to remove the remainder of the white powder. I am leery of conversion coatings, and prefer to remove rust, then treat with a preventative. However, my method is presented without proof, just as my opinion on conversion coatings is presented without proof, not saying it won't work for you.
