What are the advantages / disadvantages of using a siphon feed HVLP gun verses a gravity feed HVLP gun? It seems gravity feed guns are more prominate but siphon feeds are available.

As an EX-profissional pannter, (5000+ paint jobs) I never liked the top heavy feel of a gravity feed gun. They are harder to fill and the paint cup is right where you should be looking to see your fan hit the surface. Also if you pull the trigger on a gravity gun the paint will flow. even if the air is not on or adjusted correct. I've seen more than one paint job ruined by a gravity gun dumping a stream of paint on the paint job just because of an air problem.

My 2 cents

Personal preference mostly, gravity guns are easier to clean, less parts, use less air since it doesn't have to pull the paint thru it just pushes it

A noteworthy difference is balance. With a suction-feed, the mass of the paint is under the gun and tends to pull the noise of the gun down and I tend to have a harder time keeping the gun perpendicular to the surface. With the gravity-feed, the paint sits more over the top of my hand so it seems a bit easier to manipulate the gun accurately.

I didn't know you could buy siphon feed HVLP, if so the only advantage, to me, would be that you can set them on a bench without tipping one over. Advantage of gravity feed is no spits and sputters when it runs out of paint.

Plus gravity feed doesn't drip out the vent hole all over your new paint.
