I have some stainless and also chrome plated parts that I want to paint. Is there an type of primer that will stick to a polished surface, or how do I do this? I tried roughing with sandpaper but dont seem to do much.

you will need to either sandblast the chrome to provide a profile for the paint to stick to, or use an acid etch primer with as high an acid content you can get, the acid etchs the surface and provides adheasion

Thanks Frank, I will phone around today and try to find an acid etch primer. That would certianly be easier than sanding everything.

Last week I concluded my paint and bodywork advice was useless and not professional but here I go again. The stainless you must scuff sand[Ill let the painters specify what grit to use]The chrome is very hard and difficult to sand.Chrome shops will strip it at way,way cheaper than putting it on.I have done it with a six volt charger and plastic tub but you must add sulphuric acid[couple ozs]to the water. Then I stopped at the nickle layer and sanded that.If you continue the nickle will start to bubble off in small spots causing an uneven surface. It was also difficult to purchase one gallon of sulphuric acid not being a business.[pre 9-11].Last time I took a few parts to a local plater I was charged $8.00 for the strip only parts. If its roughed up pretty good with sanding the paint should also be ok I just like to remove the top hard chrome plating.[if you use the batt charger method you must ventilate the area.]
