After much anguishing, I have elected to go with PPG Concept over epoxy primer for my Farmall M restoration. The supplies are being delivered tommorrow. I feel like this was a wise choice and Concept is a quality paint. Any comments about use and experiences?

Thanks in advance!

What factors did you use in making your decision? I am at the decision point and today posted a message for CNKS. Think I will use the PPG 71310 paint. As to the primer???

I considered all major brands when making by decision. In the end, the PPG distributors knowledge and general helpfulness won the day. Also, the many glowing remarks about PPG products on this forum factored in heavily. I am using the DPLF primer over Concept single stage urethane.

I also went with the red tinted primer to aid in coverage. My total cost was about $500.00 in materials to use the Concept system. I probably over-bought on quanities, but I am painting small sections while re-assembling the tractor so there will be some waste. Someone who is painting a tractor that is mostly assembled could get by for a little less $$$.

I suspect I will use a primer/surfacer such as PPG K36 which is sandable on the tin work over the epoxy. The cast is pretty rough by nature, so not much point in doing a lot of sanding there.

I am going to repeat here what CNKS has stated many times: If you are going to use a paint system with hardeners, you MUST use the proper safety gear (supplied air system, etc.). My PPG distributor recounted some horror stories of people who thought this was not necessary.

I decided to go with DPLF for the epoxy and so far I have only done the tin for the A, hood, grill, fenders & fuel tank, but I am really happy with the results. I used K36 for the primer surfacer and liked the results better when reduced, both for increasing the pot life and went on smoother. Sanding was awesome, I let it sit for a week before final sanding to be sure there will be no more shrinkage. I was told Concept will cover better and is easier to repair dust specs etc than the Omni system, haven't got that far yet. Some guys have told me to give another 2 coats of epxoy before color, and I will as I broke through to bare metal in a couple of little spots while blocking, also the DP74LF is red oxide and top coats should cover even better. Enough rambling.

I followed the epoxy with filler where needed, I was told it would adhere better than to bare metal. Rod answered your question -- epoxy primer on everything. It is all that is needed on the cast, on the sheet metal, you need a couple of coats or so of a sandable surfacer on top of the epoxy, the number depending on how smooth you want the surface.

Hi Charles,

I'll throw my opinion in here. Nothing beats epoxy for a bare metal primer. If you want to stay within the PPG system (and I think you should), you have two choices for epoxy primer. One is PPG's DPLF, their high end epoxy. It comes in several different shades and is pricey, as should be expected. It would be a good choice under the reasonably high end single stage Concept urethane that lcbateman mentions. The other choice (will not be on the tech sheet for Concept) would be PPG's OMNI MP-170. That is their "economy" epoxy primer and would be an excellent choice under the OMNI MTK single stage urethane. It all depends on how much you want to spend. My guess is that the Concept/DPLF combination will run about three times more expensive than the MTK/MP-170 combination. Whether you get three times the value from the higher end products on tractors where exact panel matching to an auto OEM shade is not required is open to debate. I think not but I am not going to knock the high end products - they are excellent. A few years ago I moved (down) from DPLF to MP-170 without regret.
