Fitting between gun and cup

When I clean my HLVP gun, I break the connector between the gun and cup and separate them. The connector is a 3/8 fitting that I believe is standard for paint guns. My cup is the standard quart size - I got the (maybe not so bright) idea that I could convert back and forth from a regular to a spot gun, using the same gun head, if I simply purchased an 8 oz mini cup, of the same type of design. I purchased an 8 oz cup from a different manufacturer because mine didn't offer one. The fitting size is correct, but I need to add about a half inch between the head and 8 oz cup to clear the trigger. If I could just find a male and female connector, I could couple them together and make an extending adapter. I have contacted both manufacturers but neither could help.

Does anybody know what that type of fitting is called, and better yet where I can get them? They are not the same as 3/8 plumbing or hydraulic fittings.

Hi Paul,

You're talking siphon cups, not gravity cups, right? The siphon cups I have used in the past have either 3/8" (full size guns) or 1/4" (spot guns) connectors. They have threads per inch that is the same as National Pipe threads but they are straight, not tapered. The seal is not in the threads but on a tapered seat - 45 deg I think. Those types of fittings are common in some high pressure hydraulic systems (not the 37 deg tapered ones). They are referred to as an NPS thread. You should be able to get an appropiate male/female fitting to extend the distance. It will likely be called a "male pipe-to-female pipe swivel" adapter. A NAPA store ought to be able to set you up with something from their Weatherhead line. Try to make sure that the male thread portion has an internal tapered seat. Some manufacturers do, some don't. The male thread itself will usually be a standard tapered pipe thread but that will not make a difference. The straight thread female part on the cup should couple up nicely with it. You can see one such fitting here between the brass tee for the pressure gage and the air inlet to one of my spot guns:

That one happens to be 1/4" but the same thing is made in 3/8". I am not sure what you are gaining in doing this but you should be able to fit things up if you get the right pieces.

Thanks for the information. I'll take a trip down to NAPA tomorrow and see what I can find. I just thought it would be convenient to be able to interchange two different sized cups on my existing gun head so I could have a spot gun or a regular gun just by changing the cup. I have a turbine driven bleeder gun (Wagner and Fuji make them)and it has worked well for MTK and 170.
