Reading the posts on this forum there seems to be a prefference toward HVLP guns. I just bought a new gravity feed standard gun to replace my standard syphon gun because I was wasting too much paint every time I cleaned it. I only spent $150 on a NAPA gun and I love the pattern etc. How much less overspray is there with HVLP.

For what its worth: The painter at my son's body shop says even with the best gun 70-80% or more of the paint is lost. The question came up when I asked him about a good paint gun.Waste seems a bit high to me but he has been a painter for a long time.He also says a $100-$150 gun will do almost as good a job as a $600 gun.Enough so that a casual userlike myself should not buy a real high priced gun.I am still using two 40 year old De Vilbiss syphon feed guns.Thinking about retiring them.Matco has a nice HVLV gun for a little over $100.HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

If you like your suction feed gun, you will be fine. I believe that painting is easier to learn with HVLP for a person who has not painted much, such as myself. But, if you are familiar with suction feed and can live with the additional overspray, (HVLP has it too) it's ok.

Depends a bit on the specific gun. There are standard gravity feed ones that are about as efficient as the old ones, there are 'compliant' ones which meet the pollution requirements in most areas and are in between for efficency, and there are true HVLP which are the most efficient at transfer. Very roughly, they waste about 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 of your paint respectively. For the occasional painter, conventional is an economic inconvience, for a busy one, it is economic suicide. Your conventional (which was expensive enough to likely be in the 'compliant' catagory) will give you a very good job and use some more paint.
