What is the best way to clean the outside of a carburator and a magneto? I don't want to paint them, but the aluminum or what ever they are made of needs to be cleaned up to shine. Any help would be appreciated.

Tom, Your carburetor is most likey cast iron. Bead blasing it is OK if you are carefull and you have it apart, don't try to tape over the holes, it don't work and you wil end up tearing it down anyway. Otherwise clean it with some Gumout, or other brand spray carb cleaner, and wire brush it. Then use a laquer paint (I use black) so the leaks and fumes don't take the paint off. For the magneto (and the carb if it is aluminum) Go to the hardware store and get a metal polishing kit, it will have 3 or 4 grades of stick polish. Also get TWO six inch soft wheels for your bench grinder. If you don't have any deep scratches to take off, place one of the wheels on your grinder and put some of the black emery compond on the wheel. After you have it knocked down with the Emery, change the wheel and use the recomended polish (white diamond I believe). If you have deep nicks that you want to remove, sand them out first, finishing with paper 400 or finer. Everybody who fails at this either thinks they can use the same wheel for any polish that suits their fancy, or they try to use polish to remove deep scratches. It don't work! Keep your wheels separated and your mag or other aluminum part will look like chrome and the shine will last. Bead blasting aluminum will give a pleasing satin finish but it will corode very fast. The finest polish in the kit, red rouge will also clean up the bakelite, or plastic cap to like new.

Each compound gets its own buff,or you will never get the desired results, and wash the item off when switching compounds too,so the residue won't carry over into the next, finer, polishing step.To remove oxidation from the mag,you might try Brasso metal polish? It's cheaper.
