SEM rust remover and rust shield

I was wondering if anybody has used the SEM line of products? Rust-Mort and Rust-shield. This is what my local auto paint store recommends as a rust preventor and rust shield. I am hoping that this proces will work to protect my sand blasted and/or wire brushed parts until the weather heats up to cover with epoxy primer and eventually paint.

Plus a side question. The directions for the SEM rust treatment product (Rust-Mort) say to wire bursh to remove the major rust but leave some rust for the chemical to react with. It just seems odd to me to leave any rust on the part. I watched my father restore a classic Mercedes Benz many years ago (20 years) and then it was all about bare metal. Does everybody else wire brush the loose major rust and leave some on and then apply the rust product? And if so does this last?

Thanks.

Not familiar with the brand. But, rust converters have to have rust to react with. Rust preventatives, at least the ones I have used, can be applied to bare metal. From your description, you can probably use the Rust Mort on the wire brushed parts and the Rust Shield on the sandblated parts. But, check it out first. Be sure the Rust Shield is not one of the "metal prep" type products that are generally used to kill any residual or hidden rust on new metal, then are washed off and painted immediately, don't think you want one of those. That said, I prefer to remove all rust first, then use a rust preventative. Only my opinion.

CNKS,

Thanks for the response. The Rust shield is a primer like substance and it is colored but I have no details on type, etc.. I hope the epoxy primer will go over it ok.

It maybe a mute point as i have recently found out that my wife is pregnant and therefore I can't use these anywhere near her - too many bad warnigs. So I will have to wait until the temps are cooperating here in upstate NY.

Will use the time to finish the engine on the Farmall M and then work on my Oliver 70.
