I need some help with what kind of paint and primer I should be using on this tractor. I just got it this past weekend from a friends grandfather who kept it in his shed since 1974. I'm not trying to make this a show piece but I would like to protect it and make it look better. There's only one spot of really bad rust where the fender meets the axle, the rest is just surface.

I've gotten all the parts except the console off and powerwashed them. I've started sanding the wheels with 220 wet/dry. My first question is should I be using primer made for converting rust. I've already bought the standard tractor primer and paint from Tractors Supply. I won't be sandblasting anything and I plan to use a regular air sprayer.

Am I thinking on the right track with the primer?

Thanks
Thomas

TSC paint is synthetic enamel, will fade badly if left outside. My recommendation is to sand all the rust off, possibly all the paint too, unless you consider it to be in good condition. Use epoxy primer on the bare metal and the old paint, then if you want to use the TSC topcoat (not the primer), ok, but you are better off with acrylic enamel. I assume you don't have a supplied air system; if you do not have one and are using a charcoal mask do not use hardener.

Just a few hours after posting and after reading almost all the archives, I've decided to return all the TSC stuff. Since I'm doing all this work to bring this one back I don't want to be doing this again for a while. However, after a few nights of cleaning and poking around me and my father both have admitted that this could be a fun hobby.

Thanks
Thomas

One other thing, if you use MP 170, it needs to be sanded with no finer grit than 180. On the sheet metal those scratches might show thru the topcoat, so it's best to use a sandable surfacer (MP181) over the epoxy -- not needed on the cast.

Correction -- If you are sanding the old finish you can use 220-320 grit prior to MP170, 180 grit is for bare metal -- I forgot that because I don't use it that way. Info for Omni is below:
