it can be done and 500 spray bombs later you have a tractor with a red tint, for small stuff its ok but a whole tractor i would have a hard time painting it that way. paint in a spray can just isnt the same mixture you paint with and you wouldnt have a very thick (or hard)top coat which is nice to work with, these guys below say brush it, don't if this tractor means much to you and you want to be proud of it dont brush it, go to sears, home depot, etc, pick up a cheap hvlp gun and if you have any questions get on here and ask.

Depends. It is probably some type of heresy on this board but I would think about a good old-fashioned brush job! If you are not trying to match an existing color, like doing only a part of the tractor, and do not care about matching "original" color specs, why do you limit yourself to spray cans...because you don’t have the spray equipment? I think you should consider a good old BRUSHABLE, gloss alkyd machinery enamel such as "Impervo" by Benjamin Moore…probably available at your local hardware store. This is NOT a house paint. You won’t be able to get mixed colors but they have a number of nice bright colors available. You might find it cheaper than buying a bunch of spray cans. And you will wind up with a better film thickness and an overall better and more protective job IMHO. Or, alternatively you could check out some of the so called "tractor enamels" available at tractor supply places. Just make sure that it is intended for brushing and not spraying. Some will dump on this method as "inferior" but that is relative. You can, in fact, achieve a decent job for a low cost this way.

I agree, if i did not have a air compressor, i would brush on regular enamel before i would use the wal mart spray cans.
