If you go to the web site Link they are offering the true color of gray paint for the older international tractors. The paint is suppose to be offered by Dupont but I don't know any particulars about it. I sent an email to the website about what primer to use for the paint. They told me any ordinary primer paint will work with this stuff. What do you guys think? I've already started blasting parts and priming them with rustolem primer (suggested by the supplier). Am I wasting my time?

I don't know. It's hard to believe that any paint would last that long and be sprayable. And, I'm not sure the stuff he sprayed would have the same composition as it had when it was first mixed. And, IH probably had more than one supplier mix the paint, and if they did it themselves, there is no guarantee that they did it the same may twice in a row, as paint mixing was rather crude in those days. At this point in time, I wouldn't get too excited about it. Only my opinion.

And no, don't use rustolem primer on bare metal, use epoxy -- I am not at all sure that the info on the website is actually correct -- buyer beware.

Glad to get your opinion. I see you often on the IH/Farmall Forum and value your opinion. Since I have no painting experience except for minor stuff, what paint should I use then. I would like to have the correct/most correct color of gray for my 1936 F-20 and will be later painting my 1937 F-20 red. I'd like to paint it myself. Any good painting books I could buy to hone my painting skills? I don't want to waste anyones time on the forum asking basic questions.

You are not wasting anyone's time by asking questions -- and again, what I said about the NOS paint was only an opinion. I am not that familiar with any colors before IH changed to red in 1936?? or so. Thus I don't know the gray codes. Someone on the Farmall board might. You might study the archives on this forum, as to types of paint, then ask specific questions, though. Basically you want to take your tractors to bare metal, use epoxy primer on everything, then use a sandable surfacer on the sheet metal, followed by either acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane topcoat. If you use hardener, it requires special breathing equipment -- a positive pressure supplied air system, since a charcoal mask will not filter out iso's. Since you are doing more than one tractor, you might consider the hardeners. Some people will tell you to start with something simpler -- I don't agree, unless you simply can't afford to spend the money up front. You will get better results (and spend more money) with hardened paint. If you are sure you are only going to do a one or two tractor deal, then perhaps you should just use acrylic enamel without hardener. I haven't read any books in years, and those are now out of date -- everything you need to have (except experience) can be found on this and other forums -- sometimes it may be difficult to separate good advice from bad, but you will eventually be able to sort it out. You will find a few of us that will tell you exactly the same thing -- probably then you can have an assurance that it is the correct information. I'm not going to name names because there are several who don't post very often, who might feel left out -- you will learn who you can rely on.

Thanks CNKS, I'll send a post over on the IH forum about the specific gray paint. I appreciate the information and was alittle unsure about this paint being for sale. It's a great idea but thought I received poor information about the primer and application. Thanks again.
