Recently we were watching a show on classic tractors on RFDTV. Several of the guys mentioned a paint that they particularly like and won't use any other since trying it. They said the name and I don't know how to spell it but it sounds like "centarry; sintarry" anyway something like that. Does anyone know the correct spelling and the type of paint this is? I am restoring a Farmall Cub and would like to look into using this if at all possible because the shine was great on these tractors. Russell

understand that Centari is an old technology that was kept around because of strong sales and it userfriendlyness made it popular for do it yourselfers, the newer technology would be the Imron family, Imron is the leader when it comes to fleet finishes with 70% market share in the OEM world, I think only frieghtliner uses something other than Imron on there trucks, the problem with Imron is it is not cheap and it takes some getting used to, but the life cycle is second to none and the gloss retention is second to none, as for where to find Dupont paint you can go to WWW.performancecoatings.dupont.com and there is a supplier locator link to use. there is also tech sheets for all Dupont products even the industrial products

Centari Links in reply to Russell, 03-15-2005 10:21:24
Russell,

Below are links to the DuPont technical data sheets for the three different Centari field mixes. They are all in adobe pdf format. There are also a couple of different "Centari 5000" formulations (not linked) for areas requiring special low VOC air emissions. If you are in one of those areas, the links below probably are not applicable and the products mentioned therein may not even be legal for sale there. You'll have to find that out from your local DuPont jobber.

hardened Centari acrylic enamel

hardened Centari acrylic "urethane"

Hi Russell,

You would be talking about Centari, DuPont's name for their famous acrylic enamel. It's a great AE that can be field-mixed in three different formulations. One of them is even classed by DuPont as an acrylic urethane, which I find a little unusual - but I have used it that way and it sprays very nicely. Centari is fairly pricey for what it is nowadays but it really is a very good paint, although I would not say it is any better than PPG's competitive Delstar AE. Like Centari, Delstar has a long and great history but the availability is spotty now - no longer available in the northeast that I am aware of - probably because of the nearly complete conversion of the auto repaint industry from acrylic enamels to base/clear urethanes and the ready availability of "economy" lines of AE such as PPG's OMNI. A lessened demand for a pricey AE. The Centari is still available in my area but I have no idea how much longer it will be. It must be taking a hit with base/clear usage and DuPont's less expensive NASON line of paints. I will be honest with you and say that I don't believe a good shine has anything to do with a particular brand of paint. It's all in the preparation and application. Even the cheapest synthetic enamel at $20 a gallon can produce an excellent shine - at least for a while :o).

As far as where you can buy Centari, find out who the local jobber is in your area for DuPont automotive paints. Then check to see if they stock the mixing tints for Centari.

I dont know how new the imron technology,is as oppsed to the centari,we used both on body shop school in 84.If you use centari, use the hardner in it,thats the key to the gloss and scratch resistance. Its not too hard without the hardner.I have had just as good luck with the nason dupont line ,it has to use hardner though or it wont setup ever.I have had good luck using tractor paint from farm stores, like rural king.I add automotive style harder for regular enamel to the tractor paint and thin it with regular enamel automotive reducer instead of naphtha.it makes that 20 dollar paint super hard and shiny. It covers a rough finish better than car paint to.good luck on your paint job
