My neighbor gave me a quart of gas tank liner/sealer to coat the tank on my tractor. No label, therefore, no instructions on prepping tank. Do I need to etch tank ?? If so, with what or ?????

I bought the POR15 kit that contained a cleaner, rust inhibitor, and coating. Instructions are very important. Try looking on the internet for the company on the can, and see if the instructions are available. Mine told me to remove all valves and fittings, as they will be blocked by the material. I put plugs in where they were. The instructions also make it very clear that the tank must be very clean before putting down the rust inhibitor, and must be very dry before putting down the coating. If you fail that, you may have large chunks of stuff coming off, which can only be corrected by buying a gallon of stripper, and working twice as hard removing the stuff, then starting again.

If I were you, I would get all the instructions first, then go from there.

It took me 3 days to do the work, following the instructions to the word.

I dump in a gallon of muratic or hydrochloric acid(which ever I have on hand) and slosh it around, on end and upside down until clean.Drain it and flush. Then I pour in a box of baking soda with some water to neutralize the remainging acid. The acid will also remove old lead deposits as well.

Muratic acid is the common name for hydrochloric acid (HCl)--I say this because most store clerks don't know what hydrochloric acid is. Neutralizing it is essential -- as you know.

Hydrochloric acid is usually twice the strength of muratic acid.If its the same price as it is here at Lowes,I go for the hydrochloric since it takes only half the acid.

Could be. I used to work in a chemical lab -- we got the concentrated laboratory grade (as strong as it comes, 12 molar, I believe); I had never even heard of "muratic" acid until I started looking for HCl in hardware stores, etc. I too will buy the strongest I can find and then dilute it if necessary.
