I recently painted some parts with paint from New Holland. The color was 956 Ford Red. I am having trouble getting to paint to fully cure. The surfaces are still tacky. How can I get this to cure? Do I need to use hardner or some other catalyst when I mix the paint? What type should be used?

Thanks
Nathan

I painted my tractor with that same paint the other day and it dried in afew hours, I did add 1 part FNH thinner to about 9 parts paint for spraying. Maybe your paint was not fresh or the humidity was to high,it does not dry good if the air is too damp

Could the type of thinner that I use cause a problem with it drying?

Hi Nathan,

The following is courtesy of Martin Senour's excellent troubleshooting guide. It may help you out:

SOFT FILM
(Slow Dry)
The paint film is soft to the touch, and will fingerprint or waterspot within hours/days after application.

CAUSE
(A) Applying undercoat and/or topcoat excessively wet.
(B) Insufficient dry time between coats.
(C) Improper shop ventilation or heating.
(D) Adding too much or too little hardener to the paint material.
(E) Using the incorrect thinner/reducer for spray conditions.
(F) Omission of drier in enamel/urethane topcoats.

REPAIR
(1) Allow additional dry time, maintaining a shop temperature of 70 degrees fahrenheit or above.
(2) Or, force dry following temperature and time recommendations.
(3) Or, remove soft paint film and refinish.

PREVENTION
(A) Use recommended spray gun, fluid tip and air cap for the material being sprayed. Always adjust the gun for best atomization and balance spray pattern before paint application.
(B) Allow sufficient flash time between coats.
(C) Maintain shop temperature at 70 degrees fahrenheit or above for proper dry/cure.
(D) Use the recommended hardener and measure accurately.
(E) Select appropriate thinner/reducer based on temperature, humidity, air movement, and size of repair. Allow additional flash time when spraying in high temperature/high humidity or low temperature/high humidity conditions.
(F) Add the correct amount of drier that is specifically listed in the color formulation.

The reference to "omission of drier" would be unlikely since that would mean the paint was not properly mixed, either at the factory or a dealer if you had it specially mixed for the color. I take it you bought it all premixed so one would expect that it had the appropriate drier already in it.
