I have a Farmall 806 that was repainted a little while before i bought it. However, on both sides of the hood their is run. can I sand out the spots and repaint them or will i have to do the entire hood?

Hi,

Your subject suggests that the runs are in primer. It would be unusual for the automotive type primer that I am familiar with to run - you'd have to work at it :o). A topcoat, however can run easily if not mixed and applied properly. Regardless of whether the runs are in the primer or the topcoat, it would depend on the type of paint/primer, whether a hardener was used and how long it had been in place for a repair to be successful. All I can suggest is to try it. I am assuming you know what materials were used previously and are planning to use the same. In any event, a decent spot repair, even in solid colors, is a specialty feat that I have never been able to achieve. Therefore I think you are down to repainting the entire hood, no matter what. The only decision left that I see is to try to repaint over the existing after sanding out the runs or to strip the whole hood and start over. If you don't know what materials were used by the prior painter, my preference would be to strip and redo the hood from the ground up. The only problem you might run into is to get a good color match with the rest of the tractor unless you use the same paint mix as was used previously. That's going to be the case anyway, whatever your decision on how to proceed with the hood.

Rod,

I'm not sure what the materials are that were used so i am going to try and get a paint match sand out the run and repaint, it sounds like that may be a waste of time but i am just gonna have to give it a shot. If it fails I'll just have to redo the entire hood. Thanks for the tips.
