Hello,

Are there any things to watch out for when using
oven cleaner to clean a tractor? I'm thinking of using it to get some grime off of my VAC.

Thanks,
WOD

Oven cleaner just got too expensive for me. I use lye gravy made with Sodium Hydroxide and corn starch.

I have some pictures under "Restoration Tips"at www.fboerger.com

Oven cleaner works like magic. If you can crank the tractor and let the engine warm up it works even better. If you don't get all the grime on the first try, spray it again. Make SURE you get it all rinsed off or it will show up in a few days as corrosion, sorta the way battery acid makes paint look. I ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN APPLYING AND RINSING OVEN CLEANER. IT WILL BURN YOUR EYES IF IT GETS IN THEM. Be especially careful when rinsing it off as it will splash back on you at times.

Does oven cleaner work better or worse than the comercial grease removers on the market?

Yes, oven cleaner will work - just keep it off of any aluminum parts, like the ser # tag. It will eat those away. HTH. Larry

It will do a good job of removing the grease and grime. It will also do a pretty good job of removing the paint.

Not the answer to your question, but you reminded me of something I saw my father do years ago. He bought a tractor that was used to move rail cars at a cement factory. It was covered with cement dust that'd hardened over the years. He dumped about a dozen bottles of Sani-Bowl (toilet cleaner) on it, and then hosed it off the next morning. Danged old tractor looked like new. The cement had protected the finish.

Never heard of using oven cleaner... Time for me to learn something new here..... ...
