I posted this about a month ago & got no responses. Thought I'd try again.
Any one out there ever use a product called Rust Destroyer? Sounds like it can be used as a primer on rusty metal. It is red in color and come in quarts, gallons & spray can.

I've used this quite a bit. It's best to remove the heavy rust though. It will stop the rusting process and serve as a primer for the paint. I've found that it is pretty thick and I brush it on rather than trying to spray. Seems to work well. Paint sticks to it very well. Good luck.

I have used several types of rest restorer but at the moment I do not recall the brands. I have found that it works well and plan to use it again on a skid steer.
I did remove the scale and powedry surface rust but didnot take everytrhing down to shiny bare metal. I followed the instructions on the lable. One brand said that it should not get on the painted surface and I do not know why. It will dirty the paint but if you plan to repaint what does it matter. On one project I left the metal unpainted as I liked the antique look left by the restorer.
Hope someons sends beter info.
Johnnie

It says don't get it on the paint because it has to have rust to work properly --- .

I didn't respond because I like to physically remove the rust, thus I don't use that type product. What you mention might be ok for an old rusty implement, but I wouldn't use it on a tractor.
