Gino, I bought the Sharpe HVLP spray guns. One for primer and the other for paint. Not the most expensive. These are less than $100 each.

You will be impressed. Just need a compressor large enough to handle the cfm ratings of the guns. My compressor is a 33 gallon one from Sears.

You will love this system. Plus with a compressor you can use other tools. Let me know if I can help.

I assume Frank is talking about a turbine, I know nothing about them. The stand-alone spray gun is easier for a non-painter to learn -- speaking from experience. Experienced painters that learned on a conventional gun seem to like them best.

Actually not the turbine but just the gun, I see new painters all the time and going to HVLP is tricky, mostly due orange peel, plus the hobbyest not being able to practice everyday makes things frustrating. the newest generation HVLP guns are spraying more like convetion guns making the transition easier.

I guess I don't understand that -- I use HVLP, I haven't had much experience, and the guns work very well -- I tried a conventional gun several years ago, didn't have a clue as to what I was doing and made the worlds biggest mess. Scared me away from painting for a long time. I now have a Sharpe Platinum topcoat gun, and a Sharpe Cobalt primer gun, plus two touchup guns, one Sharpe and one import, both work well. However, I lined my ducks up first and got a lot of advice before I did anything. Perhaps the early guns you refer to had problems. As to air, they generally do use more than conventional, I made sure I had a large enough compressor, the Platinum does not use a lot of air, compared to the Cobalt, unfortunantely Sharpe replaced it with one with higher air consumption. I really think that you and Rod(NH) are used to conventional guns, and that HVLP requires a different technique, mainly that you hold the gun closer to the surface and move slower, hard to get used to, thus I don't blame you for preferring conventional. When I started, I had no technique (still isn't the best, because I don't paint much), so I learned HVLP.

Hi Gino
I would not recommend an HVLP for novice at all, they are hard to get used to,you need to adjust your hardener and reducer selecttion to get the paint to flow, you need a huge volume of air for them to work correctly, and unless you are working in a shop and need one for regulations . I would have you use a conventional gun like the SATA RP or the Devilbis plus gun. if you have to use HVLP the Iwatta LPH 400 is the best in the business right now
