As some of you may know, I am restoring a 1955 Model 40 S. I am down to the paint and I was pondering what to do with the Manifold. I think it was originally painted Classic Green, but I have looked at several in the shows and I have found a couple that was "Black". I am assuming that the Black is some sort of high temperature paint because it looks good with no discoloration. Now the question.. Should I paint it Green and let it discolor, or will the "Purist" out there jump down my back if I use the Hi-Temp paint.... ? What is your thoughts?
Bob

We paint all our JD manifolds with a high temp rustoleum grill paint. It stays looking cleaner. I've never had a "purist" to say a word. As a matter of fact we took Best of Show with a Leader tractor last summer, and the manifold was black. I've seen quiet a few show winners with black manifolds.

If you want to paint it black I would sandblast it and use John Deere muffler paint. I did a 706 manifold 5 years ago and it still looks good.

The "purist" is not important, do as you like. That said, I think any color other than OEM looks strange, I prefer to just let it burn off. But, its your decision, no one elses.

Original Equipment Manufacturer, in this case it means the paint from the factory was not high temperature, it burned off.
