I read in an earlier post that p100 mask was good for grinding and wire brushing old paint off tractors that could contain lead.

The post said not to use n95 mask for grinding. Is a n95 mask good enough for painting as long as you don't use a hardern? Is it ok to use with enamel paint and reducer only? Or is there a ?100 mask that is better?

Thanks,

LBH

The terms 100 and 95 refer to particulate pre-filters, they do not filter organic fumes, charcoal does that. If you have a charcoal mask, then you are ok for automotive paints that don't contain hardeners. The 100 series particulate masks remove almost 100% of particulates, including lead, the 95 series removes 95%, so with a 95, you are breathing some lead dust. You can buy charcoal masks/filters with or without the particulate prefilters.

CNKS,

So what is the best 3M mask you can buy for painting? (without hardern) and What is the best 3M mask you can buy for welding and grinding when you are possibly dealing with old paint that might contain lead?

Could you list the name and mask number for both of them? I will go and buy both kinds once I get the numbers.

Thanks,

LBH

I don't pay any attention to the brand of mask, I believe mine is an AO Safety, because the place where I buy a lot of stuff had them -- just make sure it says "organic vapors" on it if you are going to paint or use toxic solvents. Be sure the place you buy it from has replacement cartridges, as most brands do not interchange. I believe the NIOSH spec for vapors is TC-23C. For your purposes the particulate 100 series prefilter is recommended for lead dust, the 95 series will not filter it all out. Not much difference in price, the 100 prefilters on mine are about twice as thick as the 95's. I see no reason to buy both. Main thing to remember is that the filters have to be changed "regularly". I use mine for paint removal, and also for solvents, as well as painting without hardeners. I use new filters as soon as I can smell the solvents. The way I use them, the filters probably need to be changed at least once a month, much sooner if I am painting. I keep the mask in a sealed baggie when not in use, as the charcoal will continue to absorb whatever fumes are in your shop, even when not in use.

I re-read your post, by buying "both" you meant particulate and vapors, separately. The one I use has charcoal for vapor and P100 prefilters -- I do not know if you can buy a P100 particulate filter stand alone mask that fits well enough to screen out lead dust -- the fit is the reason I but the charcoal/P100 type mask. There are disposable "dust masks" with 95 or 100 filters, I have never tried one. I have used dust masks for dust (not lead dust), but IMO, they do not fit well enough to filter everything out. But, I have not used the P100 type -- so I really can't answer your question. Gemplers (www.gemplers.com) does sell a "2730N N100 Particulate Respirator" made by Moldex for $30.95 for a box of 5. Item number 10854. It looks to me like a dust mask that hopefully seals better--I have no idea how well it works or how long an individual mask will last before you lose the fit and get leakage. For that price you can get a real mask, replacement filters are about $15.

Is a P100 mask better then a N100 mask?

Without looking it up, I believe that P resists oil, N doesn't, I don't think that applies to what you are doing.

I guess my question is a N95 mask for painting as long as you don't use a hardern the best mask you can get? Or is there a N100 that is better?
