I have a 1941 farmall a that was very leaky. We have sealed everything up now. What is the best way to clean up all of the oil on the body and chassis to make sure I will get good adhesion of my paint? Do you reccomend sandblasting? What type of paint should I use? Also, does anybody have a template for a bracket so I can put a 12 volt alternator on this tractor? Does anybody sell a pre-maid one? I bought this tractor for my dad 1 month before he died. I want to make him proud. Thanks for your help, Steve

Frank is correct. I would not sandblast the chassis because sand gets in everything. I use multiple applications of oven cleaner, paint stripper, etc followed by pressure washing. The the remaining paint is removed with an angle grinder with a wire brush and various other wire brushes on an drill where the angle grinder won't fit. A needle scaler is helpful in the hard to reach places. You can sandblast anything you can remove. I then remove the rest of the contaminents with various cleaners, the follow with mulitple applications of a wax and grease remover made by the same company that makes the paint. There is no easy way to do it if you want a "professional job".

If you're using a Delco alternator, you can use the original generator brackets. Turn the lower one upside down & use some all-thread for mounting. Also may have to grind some material off of top side of bracket so alt. will almost touch rocker cover. The top bracket should work, might have to do a little bending.

Hi Steve
I have a Farmall B and had the same issue with oils and grease, I used engine cleaner and a pressure washer, it took several applications and in hard to get areas i put mineral spirits or laquer thinner in a spay bottle and used a brush or red scotch brite, and finnally went over everything with a good wax and grease remover, I used Dupont 3900s, As for what paint to use, there are a ton of variables, the big ones are cost, life cycle, and your skill level and equipment, an epoxy primer with a urethane topcoat would be best but require all the tools and alot of practice and cost but it would be the best, I am a rep for DuPont and would be biased to have you use DuPont Imron or some fleet finish, I will say there are other companies like PPG, that make fine products as well, Rod could give you the PPG info. In either case you will need specialized stuff like a good compressor, spray equipment, and saftey equipment, or you could always do the prep and farm out the paint to a local shop
