For those who use PPG's OMNI MP182 urethane surfacer:

Watch your time after mixing with the hardener. It has a one hour pot life and they mean it. I was doing a full four-coat process today at 68 deg F using the slow MH166 hardener. The tech sheet says 10-15 minutes flash between coats. I like to allow a liberal flash time generally so I tend top go for more like a 20 minute flash. That's really pushing it to the limit on pot life as I found out. The last coat was noticeably thicker and caused a dimished fan pattern. The leftovers will be jello in another hour :o). You'll also want to disassemble and clean your gun as soon as possible after that last coat.

THANKS ROD FOR THE WARNING. I WENT TO MY PPG SUPPLIER TO GET PAINT FOR THE SUPER M THAT I'M ABOUT READY TO PAINT. THEY DIDN'T CARRY THE MP 182 ANY MORE, - THEY ONLY HAD A QUART LEFT. IT'S BEEN REPLACED WITH MP 282 WHICH ACCORDING TO THE P-SHEET IS ABOUT THE SAME AS 182. FYI.

I have never used the 282. As CNKS says, I hope it has not actually replaced the 182 and that it's only your dealer that indicates that. I'm using 182 that I bought three years ago so I don't know what the situation currently is at my dealer. The tech sheet for the 282 does indicate a shorter flash time between coats and a very short pot life - 20 minutes using the "normal" hardener and no reducer. It looks like there is a higher film build per coat with the 282 but only if you don't use a reducer. I suppose the higher build and faster flash would be desirable in body shops where time is money. Perhaps that's why your jobber sells that instead of the 182.

As a side note, I am dealing with pits right now on my AC-B fender. I think I underestimated the depth of some of them. Fours coats of 182 did not fill them all in. I applied another four coats after sanding and that seems to be enough although I have now cut through in a few places and will have to apply another final coat prior to topcoating. I should of (remember that I coulda, wouda, shoulda thing) used 2K finishing putty over everything first. Pits are a time-consuming pain to mess with. If you are dealing with pits, the 282 probably will get you there faster, with fewer coats, as long as you don't use the reducer. Just watch that even shorter pot life.

P-sheet looks more complicated as to pot life, reducer increases pot life, with no reducer it's only 30 minutes at 70 degrees, up to 1 hr (same as 182) with no reducer. P-sheet for 282 is dated 7/2003, I believe, so it's not new -- looking at it I hope my dealer still has 182, and that yours simply chooses not to carry it.

Can't type or read today, Rod is correct, 20 minutes with no reducer -- I can't do much of anything in 20 minutes, would have to mix each coat separate.
