I ahould have said to forget the rattle can primer and put the Picklex over bare metal. I missed the part about the basement -- everyone in the house is breathing paint fumes, unless you have some sort of a vent -- not good. If you are going to have the fenders painted, use the Picklex on the bare metal, and let the painter prime them, as the topcoat and the primer have to be compatible. If you are going to topcoat with rattle can, continue what you are doing (preferably some place else) and buy paint from the same manufacturer if possible. Picklex comes in squirt bottles and is smoothed out with a brush.

Either treat it with a rust preventative such as Picklex 20, or use epoxy primer. The former is easier because epoxy primers have a relatively short time period to topcoat, a couple of days to a week, depending on the primer. If not topcoated in the proper time frame, you have to scuff and reapply. Picklex will last for months if kept dry, just treat with wax and grease remover before priming over it. I wouldn't use rattle can on anything that you intend to topcoat with quality paint.

HI CNKS, YOU MENTIONED THIS PICKLEX 20 DIFFERENT TIMES IN YOUR POSTINGS. Where do you buy this PICKLEX 20? AT JUST ANY PAINT SUPPLY STORE? IS IT EXPENSIVE AND DOES IT "GO A LONG WAY COVERING" SHEETMETAL?
THANKS
KEN

Available from Autobodystore, see the link. It's expensive but lasts a long time, as it doesn't take much. A pint will do the sheet metal on several tractors. Also available from the manufacturer in larger quantities at a somewhat lower price. I don't use it as much as I used to, as I live in a dry climate and don't get hardly any rust on bare metal. I have had untreated bare cast sitting around for months with no visible rust, I will clean it good before I paint, however. Humid climates are a different story. I do not use it as a "rust converter", unless there is some isolated place that I can't get all the rust off and don't want to sandblast. A cheaper product, called "Rust No More" or something like that is sold at Home Depot. It appears to do the same thing, at a fraction of the cost. Have not painted over it as yet, though. I don't think either are a problem on sheet metal. On cast they are absorbed into the pores, I try to remove as much as possible before painting either sheet metal or cast, but it "probably" is not a problem. Internet or the manufacturer are the only places I know of to purchase Picklex.
