I am getting ready to paint a 1948 8n ford tractor, and I need to know if I should do the engine with a high temp paint,or just shoot the whole tractor with the same paint.I'm using a acrylic enamel sherman williams paint I had custom matched at a local Napa parts store. It is very top line, over $100 a gallon.Has clear mixed in already.Should I paint hi-temp first, then re-spray with the regular?Or stay on the engine just with Hi-temp?Help!

Hi Eric, I would paint the engine with same paint as the rest of the tractor. But for the exhaust manifold the paint will never do. If your willing to spend big money on the paint, why not spend not as big money and get the manifold jet-hot coated. It will last and look great forever.

Randy, Do you have any additional info. you can pass along about this firm and process - I will be restoring a Farmall Super C which has a very rusty manifold on it presently. My e-mail is open if you care to provide more information. Thanks, Hal

Paint lasts on engines longer than on sheet metal -- because on a working tractor it usually gets covered with a protective coating of oil and grease. Seriously, the only high temp paint you need is on the exhaust manifold, but,I just use the same paint on everything, and let it burn off the manifold. The block will never get hot enough to damage the paint.
