I am in the process of painting an unstyled A and I was wondering if the paint that John Deere sells is any good? Also I would like any tips you can give me, I would say I am new to this paint game I have painted one tractor before. I was working on a lawn mower and had some orange peel so I tried to wet sand but it made it a dull finish do I buff it out??? BH

Hi,

Good is relative. All paint is "good" but some chemistries (not brands) are "better" than others. I don't know anything about JD paint that you buy at a dealer except I have read it is a synthetic (alkyd) enamel. If that's true, I would personally put it at the low end of the quality scale, below the acrylics and the urethanes - about the same as the usual "tractor paints" that sell at $20-$40 per gallon.

If you didn't use a hardener in the paint, you are unlikely to recover any gloss by compounding or buffing. The film is just too soft for that to work well. Get some books on automotive type painting and browse the many threads in this forum for information, opinions and ideas. And practice. You should get to the point where you can apply paint on a vertical surface without significant orange peel or runs. That is especially important when working w/o hardeners because repair efforts are then made difficult to impossible. What you see after the last coat is down is basically what you get.
