I was wondering if there is a spot that need some bondo would it be best to clean it down to bare metal and primer then put on the filler or after you clean all the rust off just put the filler right on the bare metal?

Hi Michael,

The can label on the filler should provide recommendations from the manufacturer on how to prepare the surface. It most likely will be bare metal after a coarse sandscratch.

Generally, you should remove all existing paint in the area you are going to apply the filler. The bare metal surface should have a scratch of 80 grit or coarser. I have also used the profile obtained from a bright-metal sandblast. You could also put it on top of a two-part epoxy primer after sanding (or sandblasting), if done within the time window of the epoxy. I do that successfully. I personally would not consider putting any polyester filler (bondo) over any existing paint, or other type of primer, regardless of the sanding employed. You should also try to get the metal as close to the original contour as possible prior to adding any filler. A good goal to shoot for is that the filler should not be more than about 1/8" thick.

Ditto what Rod said. On these old tractors the tin can be strightened a lot with some careful tapping. I would recomend that you not use any polyester based filler. Get epoxy resin and filler and mix your own. I use West System epoxy and West 210 microlite thickener . It has much better adhesion and is more flexible so it doesn't crack from vibration .

Another new (to me) product I will have to try out :o). Sounds like a neat alternative to polyester filler. Looks to be more common in the marine world. Here's a link to the manufacturer, which also has a search function to find local distributors - for anyone wishing to check the stuff out in detail.

Thanks for posting about it Mike.
