I degreased the block and bolster of my IH 340 U last night (I had removed most of whatever paint was remaining with a wire wheel) with two successive applications of oven cleaner followed by pressure washing. I planned to air hose dry it off, and then prime with MP170 immediately afterward. I was amazed to watch how quickly a reddish coating of flash rust developed everywhere - I mean as it dried, it rusted. Not knowing what to do, I wiped it all down with Picklex 20, and once that dried I shot it all with the 170. I know there is some question as to whether Picklex 20 should be used on cast, but I didn"t want to prime over the (rapidly forming) flash rust.

Has anyone had this experience, and did I do the right thing?

Thanks

Paul

Picklex should take care of the flash rust. To prevent most of it, you can wipe off the water with a towel. I'm probably the one that commented on the Picklex on cast -- but I have used it on two tractors with no apparant problem, so you are probably ok, as long as it was completely dry before painting. I would wait at least overnight before painting over Picklex, not saying that earlier won't work, that's only my opinion.
